Learning about our woods
Environmentally, woods provide habitat for wildlife, clean
water and air, biodiversity, a scenic landscape, and a place of solace.
Economically, woods provide employment in the wood products and
recreation industries. Woods are
excellent places to hunt, fish, trap, hike, bird watch, cross country ski and
snowshoe. Woods are an outdoor
“classroom” where all can learn about the natural environment.
NEFF presents engaging programs for people of all ages and experiences to
connect them with the woods of New England.
Our programs often take place on our own woods where there are first hand
examples of timber harvesting, road or trail construction, diverse plant and
animal life, and much more. Sometimes
our programs involve indoor presentations to landowners, foresters, municipal
boards or school groups on a wide variety of topics.
NEFF’s Community Forest Programs include several targeted efforts:
- Become a Forest Steward
Stewards advocate in the local community on behalf of
forests and sustainable forestry and serve as monitors of the NEFF Community
Forests. Won't you consider

Manomet Center for Conservation Sciences
to develop educational materials on how working forests can play a role in

Mitigating Climate Change with New England's Forests.
- William A. King Education Center
The
King Center is home base for many of the educational programs sponsored at our
headquarters property, Prouty Woods Community Forest.
The King Center expands the potential educational offerings through an
appropriate space for retreats, casual gatherings and overnight meetings.
Located
in the center of Prouty Woods Community Forest, the King Center sits atop the
second highest point in town and has spectacular views to the north and west.
The open layout of the Center and large rear porch lend themselves to indoor
project space as well as group discussion areas. The King Center provides vital
indoor classroom space, a kitchen and dining room, restroom facilities and
refuge from inclement weather.
Renovations of the King Education Center were made possible
by generous financial contributions and many hours of volunteer labor. Local
sponsors include Accent Interior Designs, Boy Scout Troop #20, Jim and Carolyn
Coull, Erickson's Antique Stoves, Furniture Medic of Littleton, Littleton Rotary
Club, Mystic Players, S& R Carpet and Floors, Vachon's Wildlife Sanctuary,
Littleton Lumber, and With Heart and Hand.
Please contact NEFF at (978) 952-6856 to inquire about use of
the King Center.
- Pre-timber harvest walks
NEFF hosts walks on each forest to share the goals and
actions before a timber sale gets started.
Community members, neighbors and abutters are all encouraged to attend.
